Kira Rotaractors Rally Behind Literacy Cause at Beach Soccer Fundraiser

On 1 August, we returned to Oceana Beach in Entebbe for the Rotaract Club of Lake Victoria’s annual Beach Soccer Fundraiser—a day where competition on the sand served a greater purpose.

Supporting Literacy and Education

This fundraiser has become a fixture on the calendar, and the proceeds support the Literacy and Education Project at St. Andrews Secondary School in Wabulungu. This year’s proceeds will go towards completing a classroom block and providing IT equipment to enhance learning at the school.

Our Team on the Sand

We fielded a nine-player team comprising Club President Alvin Ainemigisha, President-Elect Prisca Tibenda, Club Administrator Rachael Ange, Membership Director Gideon Mukiibi, Projects Director Billy Mugerwa, Public Image Chair Innocent Ezama, Club Member John Buuza, and Club Prospects Solomon Freeman and Elizabeth Arinda.
Drawn into a highly competitive group alongside the Rotaract Clubs of Kyambogo, Kampala South and Luzira, we opened our campaign with a 4-1 loss to Kampala South before narrowly falling 3-2 to Kyambogo. The final group match against Luzira produced one of the day’s standout moments. After the contest was decided by penalties, our President-Elect Prisca Tibenda calmly converted her spot kick under pressure as teammates and supporters erupted in celebration.
Defending champions Rotaract Club of Luzira successfully retained their title, defeating Kyambogo in the final to claim the 200,000 Shillings prize. We concluded the tournament with a Certificate of Participation, but the real reward lay elsewhere.

More Than the Scoreline

For us, the day’s greatest victory extended far beyond the scoreline. Our players and supporters spent time connecting with fellow Rotaractors, sharing meals and enjoying fellowship by the lakeside. In true #TheKiraWay, the event reinforced that service and friendship remain at the heart of Rotary.
Our Projects Director, Billy Mugerwa, summed up the spirit of the fundraiser:
“The beauty of this fundraiser is that the game is only the vehicle. What matters is what happens after the final whistle. The support we can give St. Andrews and the difference that a completed classroom and better access to technology can make for those learners.”

The Lasting Legacy

For the players, the losses will probably be remembered with a few friendly jokes and some banter. But beyond the results, we left Oceana Beach having contributed to a cause whose final destination is not a trophy cabinet, but a classroom in Wabulungu.
The lasting legacy of the day will be measured in bricks laid, computers installed and opportunities created for learners in Wabulungu.
