Roots of Hope: Planting a Self-Sustaining Future at Jajja Flora Children’s Home

At the Rotaract Club of Kira, we believe lasting change comes from solutions that empower rather than create dependency. That belief guided us as we partnered with fellow clubs to launch the Roots of Hope Rabbitry Project at Jajja Flora Children’s Home.

Why This Project Matters

Jajja Flora Children’s Home supports more than 60 children of various ages who have long relied on handouts from well-wishers to meet their basic needs. Among those needs, food remains the most pressing. Rather than simply adding one more donation to the pile, we set out to establish a self-sustaining food system that improves the quality of meals, increases food availability, opens up income-generating opportunities, and equips both the children and the surrounding community with practical urban farming skills.
Rabbits offer a fast, affordable source of protein, and the waste products they generate can be sold or used as fertiliser—turning the unit into a small enterprise as well as a food source.

Official Launch

We officially launched the project on 26 July 2026. Our Project Manager, Billy Mugerwa, emphasised that the rabbitry is intended to become a long-term livelihood project that can improve nutrition for the children while generating income to support the home’s daily operations.
Rhona Najjuko, President of the Rotaract Club of Najjeera, reaffirmed that meaningful community service is most effective when clubs work in partnership.
The significance of the project was echoed by the area’s LC1 Chairperson, who commended the clubs for investing in a solution that empowers rather than simply donates. He admitted that after years in leadership, he had begun to believe young people were losing interest in community service, but the commitment demonstrated by the Rotaractors and Interactors had restored his confidence in the next generation.

Training and Handover

Participants from both the home’s caretakers and the children received practical training on rabbit nutrition, housing, disease management, breeding, and the economic benefits of rabbit keeping. A rabbit farming expert answered questions from both the home’s caretakers and participants, helping build the knowledge needed to manage the project successfully long after the launch.
Following the training, the rabbitry was formally handed over to the management of Jajja Flora Children’s Home.

A Moment of Hope

An emotional message from the caretaker showed the hope the project had brought to the home, while the excitement on the children’s faces illustrated that they understood they had been entrusted with an opportunity for a better future.
As the event drew to a close, we joined our partner club in donating additional essentials, including clothes, soap and sugar, to support the children immediately alongside the long-term rabbitry project.

Through Roots of Hope, we are planting more than a rabbitry—we are planting lasting opportunity and hope at Jajja Flora Children’s Home. This is the kind of sustainable service we are proud to deliver as Rotaractors.
